- They were married at the home of the bride's foster father, Seth Bartlett, Madison, WI by Congregational Church Rev. C. H. Richards. As a wedding present, Seth gave them a green cut glass fruit bowl on a silver pedestal. It was later given to Roy and Clara Outhouse on their 25th anniversary. It is now in the possession of Lynne Outhouse Bliss.

- Mary Ann was 8 years old when her mother died. She went to live with her great grandmother and two great aunts (Anne Bossingham, Mrs Ellis, and Mrs South). She had to sit beside them all day piecing quilt blocks together because "they weren't about to chase around after a little girl."
Mary Ann's father died when she was 11. At 12, she went to work for the Barletts to run errands for his wife, who was an invalid. Unknown what his relationship to the family was. 1860 Census record shows Seth Bartlet, age 34, farmer, b. NH, Hannah, age 32, b. NY, Jesse, age 5, b. Wisc, Estella Ogden, age 13, b. Mich.
Mary worked for Seth until she married Perry. Seth gave her a bed as a wedding present. It is now in the possession of Marcia Burcalow Staton.
