OLD RUTLAND CHURCH SOLD TO CEMETERY ASSOC.
The recent transfer of the church in Rutland from the United Brethren in Christ to the Rutland Center Cemetery Association, has caused a great amount of interest and a number of persons have inquired about the history of the church.
As far as we can learn, the church was built in the year 1852, by the United Brethren in Christ and is one of the oldest churches in Dane County.
The branch of the United Brethren at Rutland then consisted of a class of about 65 members with W. T. Unton as pastor, John C. Hanan, class leader; Joseph De Parces, Taylor Valentine and A. G. Newton as trustees.
The lumber from which the church was built was part taken from the neighboring woods and sawed into lumber at the local mill on the David Anthony farm. The rest was hauled by ox teams from Stoughton, as that was the nearest railroad station at that time.
The land on which the church stands and also what is now occupied by the cemetery, was part of the farm bought by David Anthony from the government at $1.25 per acre, in the year 1846 and was sold to the United Brethren for $10.
Since then the church has been used as a place of worship and many of the present residents of Rutland and surrounding places, remember the church with many pleasant and sacred memories.
Recently the church and property was sold to the Cemetery Association and is to be used in connection with the cemetery and for funerals, religious services and other moral purposes.
The funds for buying the church were donated by persons interested in keeping the church as a momento of the work of their forefathers and a monument of pioneer days.

The "1862 Dane County Plat Book" shows that Wm Bossingham had 160 acres of land in Secs 4 & 5 of the Town of Rutland. In the "1890 Plat Book of Dane County, Wisconsin" are William & George Bossingham as land owners, principally in the NE corner of the Town of Rutland. John Bowne came to Boston in about 1648 with his father and sister Dorothy. Per the NEHGR:
7 Jan 1649, John says in his journal "I entered Mr. Phillips service." (William Phillips, vintner and innholder at Charlestown). Oct 24, 1650, "we came abord the shipp charles at Nantaskett, that day I parted with my deare father at boston, the 25th day my sister Dorothy come abord at Nantasket to take her leave of me." &c.
John Bowne, Born 1627, married (1) 7 May 1656, Hannah Feake, daughter of Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Fones and widow of (1) Henry Winthrop and (2) Robert Feake of Watertown. In 1663, John Bowne was banished to Holland but was allowed to return. He lived at Flushing, Long Island, from 1650 until his death in 1695, having had numerous children.

In 1676, before the Meeting House was built, John Bowne donated land and arranged for a burial ground on Northern Boulevard. The Meeting House was built on land purchased adjacent to the graveyard in 1694. Today, after a great deal of expense and volunteer effort, the graveyard is cleared and blooms with indigenous flowers and bushes. Old elm trees and oaks shade the perimeter and help set the quiet garden apart from its bustling neighbors. It is a startlingly beautiful, peaceful place in the midst of downtown Flushing, and it is a perfect place to remember the Quakers who lived here before us, and who lived such extraordinary lives.
The early Quakers did not use headstones and so it is difficult to say who was buried in the Meeting House graveyard before 1820. It is believed that John Bowne is buried here, as the Bowne family plot is in the graveyard, but there is no existent headstone marking his grave. When Quakers did begin using headstones, they were often small and plain with no more than a name or initials on it. Many of these small stones have sunk into the earth or shifted out of position over the years. At least one stone was stolen. -- | John BOWNE

Mrs. Blanche Brockelbank Morey, 77, 75 Park Ave, died this morning in the Health Home after a long illness.
She was born in Canandaigua, March 17, 1876, the daughter of Caleb Brockelbank and Maria Outhouse, and was the widow of Clair L. Morey. She was a lifelong resident of this city.
She was a member of the Methodist Church and first president of the BO class of that church, and a past matron of Eastern Star.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John A. Isabel Reigel, Briarcliff Manor, three sons, John R., Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Robert H. Morey, this city, Dr. Milton H. Morey, Morehead City, NC, one brother, Charles H. Brockelbank, Canandaigua, four grandchildren, Sue and Robert Morey, Toledo, and Milton Jr. and Robert Morey of Morehead City, NC. Early Sunday morning occurred the death of Caleb Brockelbank at his home on Bristol Street. He had been in poor health for some time, and three weeks ago suffered a stroke of paralysis, since which time he had failed rapidly. Deceased was nearly 77 years of age and had always lived in this town, where his industrious and upright life was known and appreciated by all who had dealings with him. By trade he was a mechanic and for some years past had conducted a copper shop.
Besides his wife he leaves four daughters and two sons, Mrs. E. W. Johnson, Misses Flora and Blanche Brockelbank, and Charles Brockelbank, of this village, and Miss Lillian Brockelbank of New Haven, Conn., and Alton of Sherman. Burial in West Avenue Cem.
