  • Notes
    • From the book " The Long Point Settlers"

Land Petition - Received July 7, 1806 of Charlotteville; daughter of Nicholas Outhouse, UE., married Josiah Gilbert of Charlotteville, requested a grant ; OC = recommended for 200 acres.

Court Proceedings - March 12, 1806, Sarah Gilbert, wife of Josiah Gilbert, relinquished her right of dower on Lot 12, Concession 4 to John Dudbridge

Outhouse Family Genealogy: (R34) "The nearest settlement west was Malahide, 20 miles and east, Waterford, where pioneers went once a year to shop. It was almost impossible to find medical help and when Abram Gilbert dislocated his hip in an accident, they had to go to Oakland, 25 miles away to find Dr. Pomeroy. The Gilberts raised six boys and three girls. The first school was near Springford. Built of logs, it had greased paper for windows and boards supported by wooden pins driven into the walls for desks. Solid logs were seats and the pupils sat facing the wall. A fireplace at one end was fed logs by the older boys."

(R34) "Sarah Outhouse spun and wove flax and wool for clothing and even though life was harsh and hard, she dwelt with pleasure on long past days when donning a clean sunbonnet and apron was all the dressing up necessary to call on a neighbor." [1]
