William was an acting 2nd Asst. Engineer during the War. In a letter to William Henry Outhouse, he mentiones that they are the only two in the family serving in the ranks. William was aboard the U.S. Phillippi when it ran aground and was destroyed by Rebel fire. He writes that 4 men were killed, 5 wounded and that he had a narrow escape.
